SITE Fest

Though many in New York are attending the Armory Show and it's peripheral art fairs as part of Arts Week in NY, I'll be in my own neighborhood covering SITE Fest for Arts in Bushwick! Follow the action @ Arts in Bushwick's blog and on Twitter!

SITE Fest is one of the many arts events sponsored by the non-profit volunteer run Arts in Bushwick. SITE Fest is an all weekend event showcasing music, theater and dance performances taking place in over 20 spaces in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Some of the performers will be blurring the lines between the show and the audience, like House of Yes who will be throwing a party/circus/aerial performance/parade all at once! Other works will be part performance art part art installation, such as Stephen Tateishi's Sleep of Reason @ Bushwick Starr.

There are also four central spaces, called hub spaces; 3rd Ward, Chez Bushwick, Grace Exhibition Space and ionSound (@ Goodbye Blue Monday). 3rd Ward will feature theater and short form performance pieces. Ch ez Bushwick will be
the spot for all things dance and movement. Grace Exhibition Space will be featuring several performance artists both days allowing you to enter the space at anytime during a piece. And ionSound is a music festival happening all weekend long at Goodbye Blue Monday in the front of house and the amazing covered backyard.

If you are in NY this weekend and don't have the money to see the Armory show or the other expensive/invite only art fairs come support local artists right here in Bushwick. All hub spaces are suggested donation and most other events are FREE or a $5 cover.

Tonight at Beauty Bar the party begins with cheap booze and dancing. Who knows by the end of the weekend you may stumble into someone's loft and see something new and fresh.

New Years Resolution: Be a better blogger...

New Years in NYC is overwhelming with options. The options are so daunting in fact that you almost want to stay home as you suffer from indecision.

For those of you who don't have a house show/party to trek to there are some New Years events that seem well worth $20-30 or are completely free:

New Lost City : New Years Eve. 3rd Ward's joint event with the underground party group New Lost City. Presenting two warehouses converted into four spaces emblematic of our city, gritty and glamorous. Full of aerial acts, female chandeliers, fire spinners, casinos, DJs, THREE large brass bands, and cheap drinks. Free champange and gifts if you don a feather mask. $29.

Surreal Estate's New Years Eve Bike Benefit. A pirate themed fundraiser for the Bedford Bike Lane Activist Defense Fund. Help support the crew who brought you the new and improved Bedford Ave Bike Lane after it was removed by the city for "safety" (aka Mayor Bloomberg catering to religious political factions for re-election). Three floors of pirates, DJs, booty loads of bands all for $20 (give a little extra if you can, these guys need your support they're up against some tough and rich opposition). Arg!

Radegast Bier Hall in Coney Island has the Coney Island Side Show performing so you can ring in the new year like a carney. FREE.

And to get rid of that hang over on New Years Day, join the Coney Island Polar Bear Club for their annual New Years Plunge!

Brokelyn, since the Great Recession of 2008...

This is my new favorite website, maybe my only favorite website...

Brokelyn provides a response to the increasingly overpriced borough we all know and love as BK.
Both Mindy and myself are based in NYC but chose to reside and spend most of our time in Brooklyn. Brooklyn is the soon to be most populated and diverse borough (take that, Queens). And as a result of it's increasing popularity and dropping crime rate we've noted the spike in prices across the board. That is where Brokelyn, comes in. Brokelyn answers all of your questions about how to live cheaply in this overpriced city. Such "brokelyner" topics from shopping to health care to neighborhood excursions to starting your own Etsy are covered. Find your wallet a little thin these days and don't know where to take that hottie this weekend, check out Brokelyn's Cheap Date Guide. And now I know where to go for reasonably priced acupuncture.

Other things Brokelyners didn't know about this gorgeous borough:

The oldest stone Dutch house in NYC is sitting in the industrial wasteland of Bushwick/Ridgewood...Onderdonk House has FREE (technically suggested donation) visiting hours on Saturdays from 1pm to 5pm. Grab some eats at Los Hermanos for a taco lunch or Northeast Kingdom for brunch.
Anyone who's gone, raves about the NYC Transit Museum, located in the historic Brooklyn Heights neighborhood with $5 admission fee. Now you'll fully appreciate the subway system and it's humble beginnings in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Though on the pricey end of things (aka $15) you can take a trolly tour through the Greenwood Cemetery, a perfect excursion for the pre-Halloween season. Or you could just walk through one of the most beautiful resting places for FREE.

Spacecraft and Farms and Sidewalks

Even though I am gone this weekend, I wanted to let you know that I added a few things to the calendar over the next few days, including:

Friday Free screening of Apollo 13 on Intrepid's flight deck at Pier 86.
Saturday: bk farmlands fundraiser at Compound Brooklyn in Bed-Stuy that will feature live music, DJs, original artwork, dance troupe, local food & drinks, growing display, cooking demonstrations, and games. All donations go toward creating more farmyards.
Saturday & Sunday: Circa Now Sidewalk Sale on 6th St between Bowery and 2nd Ave where you can supposedly find vintage clothes, shoes, bags, furniture, and kitsch for as low as one dollar.

July 31st is EMPTY

I was looking at the NYC To Do List calendar today and realized that out of the entire month of July, Friday the 31st is the only day with NOTHING listed to do. Comment and let me know what's going on that day so we can fill it up. I mean, it's a Friday, so surely something is happening.

As for tonight's events:
I will be checking out the free screening of West Side Story (a personal favorite) at the Elevated Acre. I am sad, though, that I will be missing out on seeing Harold & Maude (another favorite) at Bryant Park. And if movies don't get you excited, Skeletons are playing a free show at Zebulon tonight. No excuses for staying in!

Mindy's Mid-Week Crap

Not to be outdone by The Ging, I too have a few things up my sleeve for this week!

Wednesday:
I plan to be flat out ballsy and try and go to TWO free events in one evening.
First I will whisk down to Stuy-Town for a FREE performance by Kaki King from 6-9pm, and will then make the scramble to McCarren Park via the L train to catch the FREE showing of Evil Dead 2 (where hopefully Alyssa will somehow manage to save me a seat? wink?).

Thursday:
Bruar Falls without a doubt - we are in agreement there! But if you for some reason do not want to go (though I cannot fathom why), there is a FREE Kronos Quartet concert at Prospect Park Bandshell that looks pretty great - check out Celebrate Brooklyn for more details.

Friday:
Stark & Nimo play another set at Goodbye Blue Monday, in case you miss the Thursday show.

Saturday:
For those that could care less about Siren Fest this year (myself included), there are some cool FREE events happening for the 2009 Big Draw. I specifically would want to attend this at the World Financial Center Winter Garden from 11am-4pm:

Join Suzanne Bocanegra in creating drawings on outdated and recycled music scores that will immediately be performed in ongoing improvisations by the renowned American string group, Flux Quartet.

Between Vesey and Liberty Streets and West Side Highway and the Hudson River

Sunday:
A little Andre in the morning may be in order so that I can gather my senses, and then I will be off to the FREE Dirty Projectors show at the Williamsburg Waterfront!

Midweek Update

It's Tuesday! And there is "nothing" to do. I call bullshit.

It's time for another FREE Secret Science Club at Bell House!
Tonight's speaker is Dr. Donald Johanson, the finder of Lucy the " 3.2-million-year-old early hominid—in the Afar region of Ethiopia. With about 40 percent of Lucy's skeleton intact, she represented a new species, Australopithecus afarensis." (Secret Science Club, July 5, 2009).

I know, too much nerd in one sentence for most of you. But if you miss Dr. Johanson's talk tonight about human development and evolution you can at least check out Lucy's remains at the Discovery Time Square Exposition.

Wednesday, is hump day. And if you're not humping or looking for a little something to set the mood; there's another Drink and Draw at 3rd Ward. With booze, boobies, and charcoal pencils. For $15, ($10 with a friend or date?) you can drink as much PBR as you want and sketch a live model as fast as you can. Bring your own art fart supplies.

Or if you aren't so artistically inclined there is the second, I know I didn't mention the first, FREE SummerScreen (formerly in the McCarren Park Pool now on McCarren's ball fields). Wednesday's showing is Evil Dead 2, you don't have to be an artist to appreciate the beauty of gore, comedy and an army of zombies.

And Thursday, last but not least, I'll demand your attendance at the amazing show happening at Bruar Falls! For ONLY $5 you'll be able to listen to the picnic in winter sounds of Jason Anthony Harris, the absurdly post-pop Stark and Nimo, the cool insanity that is Afuche, and the "unpredictable" Hi Red Center.

Q: How many times have Mindy and myself gotten the question, "What's going on tonight?"
The answer is countless.

Why do you think we made a blog with information, reviews and CALENDAR WITH EVENTS COMING OUT OF ITS BEHIND?!

Now, no one I know can use, "I didn't know about that show/event?" as an excuse. It's on the calendar!

So let me now share some tips on how to stay connected to the NYC To-Do List. Firstly, sign up for a Google calendar! It's quick simple and kicks Outlook's ass. You can have email reminders for events sent to yourself, handy right?

Secondly, there is the crazy invention since the dawning of the blogosphere called RSS feeds? If you use Google Reader, Bloglines, My Yahoo!, any feed reader or have a bookmark tab on your web browser (they all have that right?) you can subscribe to the NYC To-Do List blog posts. It will provide you with the most up to date information and rants Mindy and myself have blogged. Just go to the bottom of this page and select "Subscribe: Posts (atom)". But don't get to addicted to RSS feeds or else you may not be able to enjoy all the amazing shit going on in the outerwebs (a.k.a. the place beyond your computer screen or "reality").

Speaking of which, here are some ways to spend your weekend and feed yourself at the same time!

The charming and talented Jason Anthony Harris will be playing a FREE show at Goodbye Blue Monday this evening at 9pm. Hungry too? Order some of the sandwiches and cafe eatery Goodbye Blue Monday provides and enjoy the show!

Saturday July 11th, Tomorrow.
Afuche, who we know and love (and not just because we know them) is playing with Rimsky and Hungry Hands in Ryan's Basement. To enter this show you'll need to know someone else who is attending, if you know Mindy or myself personally give us a ring! The show is FREE but donations are always accepted (donations in the form of cash or beer are especially appreciated). Cheap eats right around the corner at Fresco Tortillas, I'm sure members of Afuche will join me in giving Fresco their stamp of approval.

Moviehouse @ 3rd Ward is BACK! And they are doing a FREE screening of two raunchy sketch comedies; Titsburg and Who Died? - The Frank Zip Story. Before the screening grab some more than "just a slice" of pizza at Roberta's (it's a little pricey but so delicious) and right near the Morgan L stop.

Your solution is at the Bushwick Country Club, from 2pm to 4pm FREE Ice Cream.Net and Bushwick Country Club have teamed up to provide you with FREE BBQ and FREE Maker's Mark Milkshakes while it lasts. Shoot some putt putt after stuffing yourself with some grilling and milkshakes. You'll still have time to make it over to the Moviehouse Screening, too!

Weekend Triathlon

I'm no longer going to Cincinnati, OH for the weekend so I thought I'd provide the general public with my ultimate outdoor weekend in NY.

It's almost hot and sunny so take advantage of your momentary break in the clouds.

This is my master plan for a weekend triathlon out of and around NYC. A bike, food, wine, less than $20 and possibly a swimsuit is required.

Begin Saturday, early morning. Bike the 18 mile ride from Williamsburg, BK to The Cloisters along the Hudson River Greenway. Picnic with a bottle of wine and some food and then tour the Cloisters (pay only a $1, since it's donation anyway).

Hop back on the bike and take the Hudson River Greenway down to Pier 96 on 57th St and the Hudson River. Downtown Boathouse offers free kayaking from 9am to 5:30pm every weekend. Kayak to your hearts content.

Or if you prefer swimming stop by the Riverbank State Park and enjoy views of the Hudson and an Olympic sized pool for only $2.

Get on the bike and finish up the last 10 miles or so back to BK.

Nap. And then head down to the FREE NYC Opera performance on the Pier at South Street Seaport!

Get up early Sunday and be prepared for a day full of hiking and the Hudson. Go to Grand Central Station to catch the Metro North to Croton-Harmon ($8.25 one way) and hike the 3 miles to the start of the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail at Croton Gorge Park. The Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct have a FREE map of the trail from the Croton Dam Plaza to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, click above. Hike south along the trail and just north of Ossining is the large Crawbuckie Park, take a picnic if hungry. Continue south pass by Sing Sing. Continue until you've hiked the 15+ miles to Tarrytown (aka Sleepy Hollow). Eat food and visit the cemetery. Catch the train from Tarrytown Station back to the city ($8.25). Hikinglite has put together a rundown of the bike ride along the Croton Aqueduct Trail.

Get home and take another nap.

That's my actively filled weekend. Thank goodness it's starting to look like summer outside.

Galactic Origins, Festivals and Acoustic Beach BBQs

Go see BLAST! Playing June 12-18 @ Cinema Village
You will be enthralled watching scientists try to get a telescope into space using a hot air balloon and all the things that can go wrong. I love this documentary. And at the IFC showing last night, I found out about FREE Stargazing at Columbia University. Tonight may not be the best night but for future reference, nerds here is your new date night excursion.

Starting tonight and until Sunday, is L Magazine's Northside Festival. Hundreds of bands and art openings will flood Williamsburg. Come and check out Arminda and myself put on some moves for Afuche, playing Saturday at the Hooves on the Turf Showcase, 1pm, Trophy Bar.

And the indie music booking agent, Todd P, will have an Unamplified Acoustic Show and BBQ on Rockaway Beach - Fort Tilden, noon this Sunday. The line up is overwhelming and unplugged, it's FREE and all ages! I'll be biking out there from Bwick when I recover from my hangover. Anyone want to join me?

First Bryant Park Movie of the Summer

One of the few shining reasons I can manage to tolerate midtown is about to start again - Bryant Park Summer Film Festival! The lawn opens Monday at 5pm and McCool is saving space with her trusty lawn blanket. I plan to bring hummus and pita from Crisp and wine or something along that line will surely be involved. The movie starts at dusk and they always show a classic cartoon beforehand. Also, be ready to clap and dance to the old-school 80's HBO Feature Presentation clip.

The Sting (1973) starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford

Because 3rd Ward is sexy!

I love 3rd Ward, with an undying passion.

I love their workshops and classes on everything from silk screening to welding. I'm dying to take the woodworking classes. Plus, if you are a freelancer and join the Freelancers Union you can get discounted rates on every class 3rd Ward offers!

I also love their FREE EVENTS which almost always involve FREE DRINKS.

I'm a big fan of the Sweatshop Social Nights where they bring out home-brewed beer and a group, Bags for the People, show you how to sew reusable bags that are then donated to local greenmarkets. I'm happy to reduce the use of plastic!

Or the Handmade Music Nights, hosted by Create Digital Music, where I love to hit on nerdy boys and chug PBR.

And the Block Party they threw at the beginning of May was unbelievably awesome!

So keep it coming 3rd Ward, I want you so hard. So hard in fact that I should have made my Sex Cells submission about your gorgeous ass.

This is not so much a nice To-Do, as it is a nice To-Know. There is a service called Right Rides that will pick up women between 12am-3am on Saturday nights (a.k.a. Sunday morning) within certain parts of the 5 boroughs. The service is meant to get women home safely late at night.

It caters to Bed-Stuy, as well as most of the surrounding areas, so I am all about it! Click here for a full list of the areas they provide service to. But if you have a dude with you, they won't pick you up. Tell your guy to be a man and protect you as you walk home!

Ahhh! Big Apple BBQ is back in a big way on June 7th-8th in Madison Square Park. It all goes down between 12-6pm each day and it's 8 bucks a plate.

Once again, 17th Street Bar & Grill of Murphysboro, IL will be in attendance, showing the rest of them how BBQ is done. I am totally bringing my SIUC student ID with me when I go to their booth. And yes, I have still held onto my ID after all this time, thank you very much.

Here is the rundown on my fantasy weekend:

Friday:
Head upstate to the Catskill mountains
Once I have arrived at the Breathe Inn located in a small town called Lanesville, immediately flop down on the comfy bed in my Mali Studio bedroom

Saturday:
Wake up for some yummy breakfast
Go canoing or tubing on the Esopus
Maybe take a cooking class if I feel like it
Drive 20 minutes over to Woodstock, NY for a Midnight Ramble with Levon Helm

Sunday:
Sleeeeeep in
Have one more yummy breakfast
Begrudgingly head back downstate to reality

Sigh.... does it have to be a dream?

One day a year, for the past 29 years, nine of the country's finest museums, all ones that call Fifth Avenue home, collectively open their doors for free to New Yorkers and visitors for a mile-long block party and visual art celebration. This traffic-free, music- and art-filled celebration fills the street and sidewalks of Fifth Avenue from 82nd to 105th street, the mile now officially designated as Museum Mile. Over 50,000 visitors attend the festival annually.

This year's 30th annual festival kicks off at Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum with an opening ceremony, at 5:45pm, on the steps of its landmark building on Fifth Avenue @ 91st Street.

With meticulous detail, Ford's work depicts animals embodying degrees of personification in the context of isolated historical events. Transient moments recalled in Ford's work comment on, in his words, "the cultural history of our relationship with animals." Ford is especially interested in the perceptions of animals by humans as evidenced by documentation. After researching specific stories, Ford offers his interpretation—sometimes exaggerating the animal's supposed humanness and in other instances, stripping the animal of imposed metaphors, and thereby restoring the candor of the animal's bestial state. The anthropomorphic nature of Ford's animals is often compared to the work of artist, John J. Audubon, one of Ford's many influences.

"Caren Golden Fine Art is pleased to present Mirror Universe, the first solo exhibition by Devorah Sperber with the gallery. Mirror Universe will feature an entirely new body of work by Sperber based on images from the television series Star Trek. The title, Mirror Universe, alludes to the 1967 Star Trek episode Mirror, Mirror in which a transporter mishap swaps the crew of the Enterprise with evil counterparts, trapping them in a “savage parallel universe.” The concept of a mirror or parallel universe is a dominant theme in the show, and, in keeping with this metaphor, many of the works incorporate mirrors to view the work. For Sperber the exhibition is an opportunity to look at the relationship between popular science and art, and how they relate to larger metaphysical issues. In particular, she is interested in how consciousness and the act of seeing create the illusion of a stable, predictable, singular world."

Fans of Pee Wee’s Playhouse, RAW and SLASH magazines and the comic character Jimbo know and love the work of Gary Panter. You probably know it too, having seen his “jagged lines and surreal cartoons” in magazines, on TV and on the internet too. “Pictures from the Psychedelic Swamp: 1972 – 2001” a micro-mini retrospective of thirty years of drawings, sculptures, painting and installations opening at Clementine Gallery tonight. The show was inspired by the imminent release of the “Gary Panter: the Book” a two volume, 686-page, full-color monograph published by PictureBox. Sze Tsung Leong: Horizons

Cool Hunting occasionally brings things to me I decide I need (like Bananagrams, which I just purchased today). Thanks to their RSS feed, this exhibit is now on my to-do list:

Over the past seven years, Sze Tsung Leong has produced a series of photographs called "Horizons," which provide an expansive view of different environments from across the globe. On view at the Yossi Milo Gallery in New York through 17 May 2008, "Horizons" consists of over sixty works each measuring 14x 24 inches.

Born in Mexico City in 1970, Sze Tsung Leong spent his childhood between Mexico, Britain, and the United States and this conglomerate of cultures is evident in his photographs. Regardless of their geography (including Mexico City, Cairo, Tokyo, or Inner Mongolia), Leong manages to connect rivers, cityscapes and industrial zones into a consistently beautiful accumulation of textures and colors.

My oh my, I really dropped the ball this month. My email inbox is to the brim with my daily newsletters that I have left unopened and I have bookmarked a few things that I wanted to do, but never posted. Let's catch up, shall we?

Fridays in June are looking pretty good, thanks to the Wordless Music series being put on at the Whitney.

This is what Brooklyn Vegan told me:

At the Whitney's invitation, we asked four of our favorite groups-The Berg Sans Nipple, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Prefuse 73, and Times New Viking -to do one Friday-night set apiece at the museum's indoor/outdoor Lower Gallery space. We then invited another of our favorite groups-ACME, the American Contemporary Music Ensemble-to choose music from a broad and representative range of contemporary composers, and to come up with four complementary "classical" programs. What did they end up choosing? Chamber music, ranging from solo percussion to seven strings, by Ingram Marshall, Kevin Volans, John Adams, Chen Yi, and Jefferson Friedman.

Total cost to you, the consumer? $0.00.
About getting into these: museum admission is pay-what-you-wish during Whitney After Hours, Fridays 6-9 pm. Shows begin promptly at 7.
Space is *extremely* limited. Seating and admission for Whitney Live is on a first-come, first-served basis; reservations are not accepted.

I love it when I can promote an event related to a friend! My friend, Heidi, plays cello occasionally for the group, Quitzow. According to their Myspace page, they Sound like "getting lost in a Japanese strip mall while slightly intoxicated from love and otherwise..." I agree. This Thursday they are playing at Rehab (the venue formerly known as Club Midway), going on at 10pm. You can download a free MP3 of "On TV!" and possibly swing by on Thursday for more. Seeing a moog and cellos all rocking on the same stage is worth it!

Chrissy and I fully plan to attend the Stitch & Bitch crafting happy hour on Wednesdays from 6-9 at Southside Speakeasy in Brooklyn. You can work on your crafts and enjoy very cheap PBR tallboys and Jameson shots. Currently, I am not much of a stitcher, I do not know how to knit, and my one-time-try at crocheting when I was eight years old left me in tears of frustration. I do know how to bitch though, so I doubt anyone would kick me out. Besides, Chrissy said she would teach me how to knit, and the best way to learn how to knit is with a nice PBR tallboy by your side.

Urban Outfitters donating to BAM this weekend

You know how much I shop at Urban (more than I like to admit) and how much I love BAM (something I will gladly admit). Now one love can help another, this weekend only at the new Urban Outfitters store in Brooklyn. It is walkable from the Bergen G stop, which makes me happy!

Urban Outfitters opens its first store in Brooklyn today (166 Atlantic Avenue) and 10% of the first week of sales (through March 18) will be donated to BAM.

BAM has provided me with such amazing entertainment like Sufjan Stevens, Joanna Newsom, soon to be Paul Simon, as well as a great movie theater. Hopefully I will shop my heart out this weekend for them. <3

Muzi Quawsom photo exhibit

Focusing on “outsiders”, Ms. Quawson explores the various social, financial, and political structures that define American society. With photographs that possess a cinematic style, Ms. Quawson investigates the identity of Amanda Jo Williams, a young musician and mother in Woodstock, New York. After a chance meeting in Manhattan in 2002, Ms. Quawson created Pull Back the Shade over the course of the following four years while staying with Amanda in Woodstock and traveling with her around the country. By photographing Amanda’s relationships with her partner and young twin daughters, Ms. Quawson’s photographs comment on the frustrations of young motherhood, domesticity and social alienation.
The style of the photographs recalls the cinematography of New American Cinema of the 1970s and its aggrandizement of the anti-hero. Pull Back the Shade was first shown at the Tate Britain in London where the works were displayed as a slideshow, bringing their collective effect closer to that of a film. For this exhibition, the color negatives have been developed as Duratran prints and placed in light boxes; the result is a series of illuminated photographs that resemble stills from a color film.

I saw this exhibit last weekend and just had to say that I thought it was really great. Having the photographs illuminated in light boxes was the perfect touch and really did lend to the idea of film stills. I highly recommend checking it out while it is still at Yossi Milo.

New west-side spot: The Rusty Knot

Here, in an unassuming storefront, you'll find The Rusty Knot, the brainchild of Ken Friedman (The Spotted Pig) with the all-star cast of Taavo Somer (Freeman's), Tobey Maloney (Milk & Honey) and a Momofuku alum. The result is a detail-rich, high-pedigree Manhattan cocktail spot colliding with a kitsched-out cruiseliner and an old-school tiki room.

All you'll see from the sidewalk is the leftover awning from former incarnation West Bar, but trust us, it's another world inside. I saw Nick Cave seriously rock Terminal 5 at the 2008 PLUG Awards. I mean, seriously. Also saw Jose Gonzalez perform maybe 15 feet from me, which got me really giddy for this coming Wednesday's show at Brooklyn Masonic Temple (I still have an extra ticket, so I better find someone to go with me!).

Girls Rock!

So very true; girls do rock. And this movie sets out to prove it! Opening in NYC this Friday the 7th, Girls Rock! is a documentary about The Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls where girls ages 8-18 learn to how to be self-motivated rockers (forming bands, writing songs, and building community).

The primary subjects of “Girls Rock!” are Laura, an articulate adopted Korean obsessed with death metal; Misty, who is emerging from a life of meth-addiction, homelessness and gang activity; Palace, a sweet-seeming 8-year-old with a heavy metal sneer, and Amelia, who's writing a 14-song cycle about her dog Pippi. Forming bands, writing songs and playing a gig in one week, these girls and the rest of the camp engage in an experiment in empowerment that will leave no-one unchanged.

I don't go near the Financial District all that often, but it is still important to have a burger spot handy within different parts of the city, just in case. Burger Shoppe just opened on Water Street and they are serving their patties super old-school style.

Born from the grill-crazed mind of Pop Burger's Kevin O'Connell, Burger Shoppe takes its retro décor seriously—the display was salvaged from an abandoned diner in Philly—and proves it by serving up 1925-style patties. That means tiny 4-oz nuggets of beef, served fast enough that you'll have no problem managing the crowds. Add in a few boardwalk-style onion rings or some skin-on shoestring fries—bundled with a pair of burgers and a soda for a sawbuck—and you should have more than enough to keep you busy.
And if you stick around for happy hour, you can check out the meatier barroom menu in the more subdued digs upstairs. The real prize here is a trio of items you don't usually see at the local diner: Roasted Marrow Bones, Hot Short Rib "Pudding," and the house filet with goose-fat hash browns and creamed spinach.

Pretty neat, huh?

This week's Urban Daddy Weekender newsletter made a very vague reference to this Absolut Quartet that is on display at 186 Orchard Street. I investigated further and found an article on CoolHunting that gave a bit more info. It is on display starting tonight until the end of April.

"Absolut Machines is Absolut's promotional initiative that explores where technology meets design in the form of two "machines." Last night we got to check out one, the Absolut Quartet, an interactive multi-instrumental robotic machine. It consists of a marimba played by rubber balls precisely shot from a robotic cannon, a series of spinning wineglasses dampened by robotic fingers and an array of percussive instruments."

I think I have died and gone to a melodious heaven. All Points West Festival kicks off its first year at Liberty State Park this August. Three days of amazement and wonder, but the $260 price tag is a bit too steep. I am going to go with a One-Day Pass for $90. Friday is my personal day of choice. The new West Village restaurant Elettaria may not have a good grasp on the importance of Search Engine Optimization (search for them organically on Google and you will see what I mean), but as long as they have a firm grasp on good food, I will forgive them.

Here is what Daily Candy had to say:

The first-generation Americans are doing riffs on the flavors and spices of their homelands, India (Nawab) and the Philippines (Cruz). Wild boar with cumin. Saag paneer gnocchi with cloves. Fried coconut cream with ginger mousse and tamarind sorbet.
Elettaria (Latin for “green cardamom”) was once home to 8th Wonder, a venue where Jimi Hendrix performed. It still has a clubby feeling with velvet curtains, exposed brick, and an open kitchen where the cooks are very much on stage.

Could be interesting and NYMag didn't make it sound too excessive as far as cost is concerned.

John Chiara: Land's End

I will be M.I.A. from the city this weekend as I journey to the midwest for some much needed SIU-Crew time with Mark, Pat, & Amanda (and apparently Tommy boy, too) in Chi-town. BUT, upon my return, I have yet another gallery exhibit that I would like to attend.

Enter John Chiara, a San-Fran based photog who has a rather unique approach to landscape photography. According to the Von Lintel Gallery website:

Chiara takes stunning landscape photographs that involve much more than what is in front of the camera. They are, in essence, images of photography itself. Chiara operates a hand-built, room-sized camera that is mounted on a flatbed trailer. He works inside the camera, physically becoming a part of the process. During the long exposures, he dodges and burns by passing his hands in front of the camera’s lens. The one-of-a-kind, positive images are then developed utilizing an adapted sewer pipe that he fills with photo chemicals.

Sewage pipes and flatbed trailers? I gotta see this.

Yesterday was a drunken affair with a microphone at Duet, Kyle's I-am-temporarily-back-in-Manhattan bash in Midtown. It was an amazingly fun time and Jesse and I both agree we need to do Round 2 with the Brooklyn crew. So Sunday, March 2nd it shall be. Why not waste away another Sunday afternoon in a small room with about 10 of your closest friends? Sidenote: the establishment does not take kindly to patrons that bring their own alcoholic substances. Solution: just be even sneakier about it the second time around.

Duet's Website makes me want to laugh, but then I feel like I am laughing at someone, and not with someone:

Everyone can be "Britney Spears"
and everyone can be "John Toravolta."

Aww, Duet. Please don't kick us out again.

This was the most fun I have had in a long time. Having the chance to be a complete (drunken) goofball in the privacy of friends was just what I needed. Plus, Jesse and I's heartbreaking rendition of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" was a show-stopper. I suspect we shall be doing this again very soon!

Matthew Rogriguez; an unexpected delight

This past Saturday, Chrissy and I went to more galleries then I can count on one hand (though I think two hands would suffice). We stuck to the exhibits we had predetermined, with the exception of one that was in the same building as Scott Schuman's. I was struck by the window display of a giant, plastic lobster with a huge ashing cigarette in it's pincher, so I decided to explore further. What I found inside won me over. Descriptions written in pencil (sometimes erased and re-written) next to the art work displayed on the walls. "Monsters" that were more endearing than scary. A Christmas tree laid out in the middle of the floor with an angry, cartoonish face at the tip, and a bloody stump at the other end. Colorfully painted 8x8 baking pans. Every piece on display made me smile and laugh, all for different reasons.

Who was behind this feel-good scene? Urban-artist-turned-multi-medium-dabbler Matthew Rodriguez; that's who. Check out more of his art here on Flickr. Even better, check out his exhibit, Scruffy Kitty, at the Rare gallery until March 8th. I hope it makes you smile/laugh, too.

I haven't been giving Brooklyn enough love - so here is a love note to Moto, a teeny, tiny Nuevo American cafe underneath the JM train in South Williamsburg. I have ate there a few times and have always enjoyed myself. It is small, dark, and mysterious - filled with good food, chocolatey beer, and sometimes even live music (though it is quite the feat to squeeze in the entertainers). Someone take me on a date. I'll split my mac-n-cheese with youuuu.

I have already ate at Back Forty, but I enjoyed it so much that I have been craving a return visit! They specialize in local/seasonal fare and do a good job of it. Anna and I had dinner there last year not long after its grand opening. The food left me smiling (burgers and apple-cider doughnuts - need I say more?) and their beer selection is rather impressive. They don't take reservations, but it is ten steps away from B-Side, so a PBR while waiting would help to kill the time.

I have an itching to find the unmarked entrance to Kyo Ya, a relatively undiscovered, but apparently de-li-cious Japanese eatery.

Even if you're looking for it, it's easy to miss. On the south side of East 7th street, look for a little wooden sign on a wrought-iron gate reading simply "Open." Head down the short flight of stairs, and you'll find a cozy underground sliver of a posh Japanese izakaya*.

I can't find an official website for Commerce, but from what I have read, it is opening tonight in the West Village, filling the shoes of the former Grange Hall (and before that, Blue Mill). It may be new, but apparently the appearance is a restoration of Grange Hall, complete with "intricate tile work, original murals by artist David Joel, restored booths originally made from English Chestnut and a stunning art deco Brunswick bar circa 1941."

My favorite quote comes from the Daily Candy newsletter:

"June, a nice lady who's lived upstairs for almost 50 years, says it reminds her of the old old Blue Mill."

I am going on an Ave B binge right now, so just bear with me.

I don't particularly care for the 26 Seats' official website, but I do like the review on NYMag.com:

None of the 26 chairs match in this satisfying sliver of a restaurant near Tompkins Square Park. But that seems to suit the young, happy regulars just fine, because the owner has made quite a show of putting a hallway to good use as a restaurant. The French are famously eclectic, and this exceptional little place is no exception to the rule. Framed mirrors, tiny yellow lights, the hinged, empty panels of a wooden diptych occupy the wine-dark walls. Expect little to no elbow room, but in exchange you get an exceedingly good meal at an exceedingly good price. Service is friendly and professional. Tables are small, but the southern French food has a big personality. The chef elevates bistro food to the hilt by adding smart, zingy touches: cherry juice to offset a hearty duck breast, and a sweet corn cake and champagne vinaigrette makes an unpretentious striped bass bucolic. Wine is priced to sell.

I saw Joanna Newsom perform with the Brooklyn Philharmonic at BAM last night. It was a breathtaking performance and now I forever want to be Joanna's friend and learn to play harp so we can play harp duets (if people do such things in real life).

The reason I am writing an after-the-fact blog is to point out that there was an empty seat next to mine. In the second row! (So close, I felt I could jump up and pluck her harp strings). And my ticket was only $35. Someone could have joined me to share in the experience. Too late now. Sigh. No one will believe how great it was.

Scott Schuman, The blogger-turned-digital photographer, is exhibiting his pictures of street fashion. He has gained fame through his blog, where approximately fifty thousand people visit each day. This "blogenomenon" (totally trademarking that) has caused Schuman to be listed as one of TIME Magazine's top 100 design influencers, and now does photo shoots for style.com, the official VOGUE website.

"The Lack of Desire seeks to visually represent, from a side glance, what our desires imitate: the universal lack existing in the multiple recesses of our psyche from which our fleeting and never-ending desire springs. The artworks chosen for this exhibition offers the viewer a way to be present with lack rather than escape into the endless feedback loop of desire.

In many ways, human beings desire to keep desire from being fulfilled. Without it, we would be empty, our Self would disappear. We hunt and create objects that articulate desire, but simultaneously point to its inherent lack. In fact, lack is revealed as the positive object and desire becomes a nebulous abstraction.

How do we experience this lack? Desire drives narrative. We spin our tale around desire. Lack is the absence of this narrative and reads as a “block,” a loss of narrative and direction. This is manifest in an individual viewed from behind or the smoke of an ambiguous fire. It is disclosed in the incomprehensible blankness of a doll, inanimate and pre-language."

New Museum is opening on December 1st and is offering 30 Free Hours of viewing this weekend starting Saturday at 12pm until Sunday at 6pm.

The website says this about the event:

"We have now officially given out the entire number of allotted timed tickets for Target 30 Free Hours. We expect that there will be a some tickets returned and some unused, thus it may be possible for visitors to show up during the course of the marathon event and get a ticket on the spur of the moment; but there is absolutely no guarantee!"

I don't know if this means it will be hard to get into or not, but it might be worth a trip to Manhattan to check out!

What: Seven stories of contemporary art opening this weekend with 30 consecutive free hours for your viewing pleasure.
Why: Get Lost at sunrise on Sunday.
When: Sat., noon-Sun., 6 p.m. Go at offbeat hours to avoid crowds.

Anna may be away in Europe right now, but I think I can speak for both of us when I say that we are rather often caught exclaiming, "Put it on our To-Do list!" Now, if you have heard this escape our mouths before, you know what this means. If you have not, it might seem a bit strange. Perhaps you just think it is just some Midwest thing that Midwest people do to irritate those of the East Coast persuasion.

Let me clarify for those misinformed souls out there: This is an ongoing To-Do list that we have been adding to since our arrival in New York City back in January of this year. New bar in the East Village? "To-Do List" it. Interesting photo exhibit that is ending in one week? "To-Do List" it. One-man band parading the streets in his underwear with a top hat on? "To-Do List" it.

I think you get the idea.

However, we were literally holding this amazing To-Do List together with imaginary thread - nothing was there to keep things in order. Amazing one-time events were forgotten. New bars mourned the absence of two cute, young, lady patrons during happy hour. Rare city wonders went missing on scraps of notebook paper in our bedrooms, purses, and office desks.

To fix this, I am creating this blog. Together, we now have a place to collectively save our "To-Do List" finds, and satiate our compulsive tendencies. And maybe we will actually attend an event or two in the process!

Prepare for many events to appear in rapid-fire succession as I work to post the few events and places that have somehow managed to stay on my mental "To-Do List."
